Jay Robb's Health-eLiving Newsletter

Hi Everyone!

In San Diego we have a phrase: "June Gloom." This phrase describes the cloudy conditions that dominate the coastline throughout the month of June. These coastal clouds roll in from the cool Pacific Ocean and hover over land until approximately noon each day, when the sun burns away the clouds. We then experience sunshine for 2-3 hours before the "marine layer" of clouds returns to keep us cool and shaded from the sun. While June Gloom describes our early summer weather patterns in San Diego, June is anything but gloomy in this eNewsletter, or at the Jay Robb Corporation. We are on fire, exploding, and feel truly blessed!

In this issue, you will discover why your health could be in serious jeopardy unless you are basking in the sun daily, why you may be in the throes of a pre-diabetic condition, and how to completely side-

step this potential problem, and how to kiss your "bad hair days" goodbye forever by utilizing several key nutrients! You will also find out what gout is all about (and how to prevent gout, without a doubt). Also included is an easy-to-make, gluten-free, hi-protein, hi-energy breakfast cereal that can help keep you lean, lively, and in love with life!

God bless you!

SUNLIGHT FRIEND OR FOE?

For years you've heard the pronouncements of doom: the sun causes cancer; it can kill you! Slather yourself in sunscreen to avoid the dangers of radiation and sun damage! You may be surprised, but I'm here to tell you that sunlight is actually essential to your health. Exposing your unprotected skin to the sun on a regular basis is good for you!

Obviously, staying in the sun so long that your skin burns is unhealthy, but that is no reason to avoid direct sun-to-skin contact for appropriate periods of time. Sunlight is necessary to synthesize vitamin D, which strengthens bones and muscles. In fact, sunlight is the primary source of vitamin D for most Americans and Europeans, i but many have been showing signs of vitamin D deficiency as an increasing number of people avoid the sun and overuse sunscreen.
Benefit your health by exposing your skin to the sun gradually. Initially, naturally light-skinned people may only need ten to fifteen minutes of unprotected sunlight each day to receive the minimum necessary benefits of sunlight. Naturally dark-skinned people may only need 30 minutes of sunlight initially. Your skin naturally darkens to protect against overexposure by slowly increasing skin pigmentation (tanning). Monitor yourself to make sure you don't sunburn, but as your skin darkens you must begin to increase the amount of time you spend in the sun so that you receive the same health benefits. The darker your skin is, the more sun exposure you need, and daily exposure is ideal.

Daily controlled sunbathing can:

Protect you from cancer. Regular exposure to the sun can protect you from cancer of the breast, colon, ovary, bladder, womb, stomach, and prostate. Even though many believe that the sun causes cancer, in appropriate doses it can prevent cancer much more than it causes it. ii If you want to avoid many forms of cancer, sunbathe regularly.

Prevent depression and enhance your mood. Going out into the sun increases your body's production of serotonin, a hormone that affects your mood positively, making you feel relaxed and happy. Many individuals suffer from seasonal affective disorder (SAD), a weather-related depression that is often caused by lack of sunlight in winter. Controlled daily exposure to sunlight can lift your mood. Spend more time in the sunlight and feel the relaxing effects. iii To avoid depression and lift your mood, try a regular dose of sunshine instead of turning to drugs!

Lower your cholesterol levels. The ultraviolet light that comes primarily from sunlight has been shown to break down cholesterol significantly. Other fats that are related to heart disease can be reduced by exposure to UV light, as well. iv Move over, Lipitor; let the sunshine in!

Slow the aging process of your body. Sunlight is necessary for the synthesis of vitamin D; interestingly, vitamin D makes your DNA age more slowly. You can't easily get a proper amount of vitamin D in your diet, so exposing your bare skin to the warm sunlight is the only way to get the youth-preserving benefits of vitamin D. v Get young with the sun!

Make your heart stronger and more efficient. In a study conducted at the Tulane School of Medicine, 20 individuals were exposed to ultraviolet light. Dr. Raymond Johnson found that cardiac output increased an average of 39 percent in 18 of the 20 people tested. vi Add sunlight to your training program!

HELP FOR HYPOGLYCEMIA

Did you know you that most Americans eat more sugar than they should? If you are consuming too much sugar, sweets, refined carbs, and/or junk food, watch out for hypoglycemia. Often called low blood sugar, hypoglycemia is the term for blood glucose levels that are lower than normal. It occurs when your blood sugar level drops too low to provide your body with enough energy. vii Hypoglycemia has often been considered a sign of early-onset adult diabetes. Those already afflicted with diabetes might be interested in a recent study, which found that over a thousand young people have been harmed or killed from using insulin pumps incorrectly. viii  Like most conditions, hypoglycemia can be severe or mild, and can be caused by a
variety of factors, such as ingesting too many simple sugars or being on an extreme low-carbohydrate diet.

For those who suffer from hypoglycemia, there is hope! Proper diet, nutrition, and exercise can do wonders to enhance your health. It did for me! Utilizing my Fat Burning Diet principles and the Jay Robb lifestyle, I kissed my hypoglycemia goodbye thirty years ago! If you are concerned about developing hypoglycemia in the future, you can minimize your risk by reducing or eliminating sugar, sweets, and junk food from your diet. When eating to manage hypoglycemia, it is most important that you regulate your intake of food by eating at least three balanced meals that contain natural carbs, so that glucose enters your bloodstream at a slow and steady rate.

To help combat hypoglycemia you can:

Avoid eating simple sugars, such as honey, white or brown sugar, molasses, corn syrup, maple syrup, and all other refined sugars. The human body can easily handle complex carbohydrates, but when fiber and nutrients in carbohydrates are removed (creating a simple sugar), the body cannot function as efficiently. ix

Choose high-fiber foods. Low-fiber foods, especially fruit and vegetable juices, are a poor choice for those with hypoglycemia. The natural sugars in both vegetables and fruits can cause a sugar spike. The fiber that naturally occurs in fruits and vegetables can slow the delivery of sugar to your body. Most juices are void of all fiber. Opt for fresh fruits and vegetables instead. Your blood sugar will thank you. x

Eat good carbohydrates. While many people with hypoglycemia believe they are sensitive to carb-rich foods, what really causes the glucose reaction is how refined most of our breads and pastas are. Vegetables are an excellent source of fiber-rich carbohydrates, and can help you get the vitamins and minerals you need, too! xi

Avoid caffeine. Caffeine is never good for you, but when you're fighting hypoglycemia, it's even more important that you avoid it. Caffeine causes stored sugar to be released into your blood, which can create a sugar spike that you're trying to avoid. xii

TIP! For more information on eating to avoid hypoglycemia, see my book The Fat Burning Diet (or my NEW condensed version, The Fat Burning Diet Made Easy, available soon.

YOU CAN HAVE HEALTHY HAIR!

Have you ever been envious of someone else's beautiful head of hair? Do you think having beautiful, healthy hair is little more than a dream? Did you know that you can mitigate hair loss naturally and make your hair look healthier than ever with a few simple tips?

Your entire body is affected by the food you eat, and your hair is no exception. In fact, since your hair is largely composed of protein, you have a significant ability to affect the health of your hair. Take advantage of it! Maybe you will never have the perfect hair you see on shampoo commercials, but you can certainly improve the hair you have.

To make your hair more healthy and beautiful than ever, you can:

Power up with protein. Eighty-eight percent of your hair is composed of protein. When you aren't getting enough protein in your diet, your hair suffers. Protein strengthens your hair and makes it less prone to damage, so for strong, healthy hair, make an effort to add more protein to your diet. Good dietary sources of protein include meat, poultry, fish, and dairy products. For another great way to increase your protein intake, see the helpful tip on protein powder supplements at the end of this section! xiii

Know your hair. Are you more prone to oily hair or dry hair? Oily hair can be partly due to a vitamin B deficiency. To get more vitamin B in your diet, increase your intake of green vegetables, beans, nuts, and peas. On the other hand, overly dry, stressed hair can result from a shortage of vitamins A and C. Foods rich in A vitamins include carrots, squash, broccoli, sweet potatoes, cantaloupe, and apricot. Vitamin C is found in citrus fruits, tomatoes, melons, and cucumber. xiv

Drink plenty of water. Water makes up approximately 25 percent of the weight of a strand of hair, so drinking plenty of water is vital to the health of your hair.

Get your nutrients and minerals. A deficiency of zinc can cause hair loss, and vitamins A, B, C, E, and K are particularly important for hair health. Also make sure you are getting plenty of iron, magnesium, and omega-3 fats.

Break bad habits. Hair looks healthier when you eat healthier. On the other hand, it looks worse when you indulge in poor health habits such as smoking, excessive drinking, recreational drugs, and even drinking caffeine regularly. For your best hair ever, break poor health habits.

TIP! To make sure you are getting adequate protein to support the growth of beautiful, healthy hair, try Jay Robb's Whey or Egg White protein powders. Or, to ensure that you are getting some of the basic nutrients your hair needs, try Jay Robb's Perfect Day multivitamin and mineral packs!

Q & A

Q:  I'm 53, study Kempo four to six hours a week, walk, and I do squats and pushups. I had a gout attack last May and have continuing problems with gout and joint pain. I wonder if this may have been caused by following the Atkins Diet? At any rate, I'm a healthy 265 pounds, but I should be under 200. I have your Fat Burning Diet book. What do you think about the gout issue in relation to the high-low protein/carb aspect of your diet?

A:
I am not in favor of low-carb, ketogenic diets such as the Atkins Diet or Protein Power. If you have followed the Atkins Diet, or any other low-carb diet of this nature, then your gout flare-ups may be directly related.

Gout is caused by a buildup of uric acid. In this condition, monosodium urate (uric acid crystals) are deposited on the articular cartilage of joints, tendons and surrounding tissues due to elevated concentrations of uric acid in the bloodstream. This provokes the inflammatory reaction of these tissues.

In general, consuming dark meats (which can cause inflammation) and seafoods in excess can directly lead to problems with gout. Consuming beer and soft drinks, even in moderation, can also radically increase the risk of a gout outbreak.

Many individuals say a diet high in protein is the reason they develop gout. In reality, not all protein rich foods lead to gout problems. Dairy products, which are rich in complete protein, are usually gout inhibiting.

To avoid uric acid build-up, your diet is your best line of defense. If you are susceptible to gout, avoid dark meats, liver, egg yolks, and most seafood. When choosing protein, lean toward whey protein, egg whites, chicken breasts, turkey breasts, cheese, yogurt, and milk. Taking 3-9 deep sea fish oil capsules daily can help alleviate inflammation, as can taking 2,000-3,000 mg vitamin C per day. Keep your intake of fruits and vegetables high to provide your body with the alkaline minerals it needs to maintain homeostasis of the blood and fluids.

As far as the Fat Burning Diet helping you avoid uric acid buildup: yes, it can-if you will follow its principles and
utilize the protein foods listed above while avoiding the gout promoting proteins.
